Organising Chairman, WTC 2020

IEM President

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) has a clear goal in sight and that is to be an excellent and exceptional host of the World Tunnel Congress (WTC) and General Assembly of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) in 2020.

WTC2020 will gather together a technical programme of leading international speakers, a delegation of highlevel officials from various government authorities, private companies and other registered delegates from the engineering and construction industry, an exhibition of international service providers, and a vibrant group of young engineering undergraduates.

WTC2020 will also provide a learning platform for up-and-coming engineers. I am therefore particularly pleased to note that IEM has continued to support students, rising stars and graduates through discounted registration prices. We hope to continue to invest in the training and development of our young engineers, and to recognise that their attendance to an event such as this is an important part of their knowledge cache.

Despite the age of austerity in which we now live, governments throughout the world are still investing heavily in infrastructure, of which tunnels are an important component. With this demand comes the responsibility to undertake our designs and installations to a sufficient degree of skill and care. Our ultimate aim is that the knowledge we gain from WTC2020 and the interaction between the participants can help us improve our skills and enable us to deliver services and products with the requisite standard of care.

Warmest Regards,

Ir. David Lai Kong Phooi
President
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia
